The new government faces the task of combating organised crime and freeing public institutions from political control, whilst safeguarding the country’s unity and sovereignty. The key question is how to prevent the premature fragmentation of a movement that is ideologically quite heterogeneous, yet united around a minimal programme and the desire to overthrow the regime. Nevertheless, the coming period presents a historic opportunity for the construction of a genuine left-wing alternative.
